"Today I am Very Lucky!"

'LUCKY ME!!'

In the spring of 1988, Dr. Robert Arnold indicated I should begin having mammograms periodically. A mammogram at UMC indicated a problem and I was referred to Dr. Gerald Woolam, who preformed a lumpectomy. The pathology report indicated malignancy, but it was contained and had been removed. Radiation was suggested as "insurance." All of this was taking place as I was preparing to be remarried at age 49. Dr. Virginia Rauth directed the series of radiation treatments in July, 1988, and Bob York and I were married on August 6. There was no burn and no side effects from radiation - LUCKY ME! Early detection, competent physicians and a wonderful man who stood beside me, as well as my three children, gave my life new meaning.

Mammograms continued as directed through the years that followed. No problems - LUCKY ME!

Sixteen years later a mammogram indicated ìsomethingî that caused Dr. Mike Owen to send me immediately to a surgeon. After several tests, it was determined cancer had again reared its ugly head in the same breast. After numerous second opinions and consultations, I made the decision to go one step further and have a double mastectomy and reconstruction. LUCKY ME again - no chemo or radiation was indicated.

LUCKY ME!! No more mammograms - just self exams and routine follow-up exams. Iíve now been "cancer free" for four years and a survivor for 20 years!

LUCKY ME!
